Shifra Jacobson – Management & Coordination
For the past forty years, Shifra Jacobson has been a human rights and social justice advocate. She describes herself as being a lifelong learner as well as an adult and popular educator. After an absence of 14 years from South Africa, Shifra took her first job at Grassroots Educare Trust as part of the resource centre in developing materials and programmes for early childhood development. At the time she was involved with women’s building cooperatives. In the late 1980s became increasingly involved in children’s rights and co-founded Resources Aimed at the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (RAPCAN). Rapcan developed partnerships with the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, The Children’s Institute at UWC as well as UCT.
She joined the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation developing continent-wide networks for human rights responders in eleven countries in Africa. She was commissioned by the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund to conduct research to develop a neighbourhood response to child abuse prevention. Shifra became Assistant Director of Education at the Cape Town Holocaust and Genocide Centre training teachers and learners as well as police personnel in antiracism and the dangers of prejudice, bias and assumptions. From 2009 until joining the Counselling Hub in 2019, Shifra joined a Jewish welfare organisation in order to establish a coordinated mental, physical, aged and indigent care providers network.
In the next phase of the Counselling Hub, Shifra will spearhead a project on creative arts and expressive therapies as part of amplifying and expanding integrated mental health practices and education. Shifra has a range of professional qualifications including attending London’s, Goldsmith College, at the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance and qualified as a movement specialist. Whilst in London Shifra obtained a diploma in Urban Community Studies at the London School of Economics. In 1988 Shifra obtained an advanced diploma in adult and popular education at the University of the Western Cape. She then went on to do a postgraduate diploma in women and gender studies at UWC. She then joined UCT’s Medical Sciences Department doing a 2-year study in addiction care.
Shifra is a trained facilitator and underwent leadership training at the Desmond Tutu Peace centre. Shifra has taken part in 5 courses on Mindfulness. Shifra was a professional contemporary modern dancer until the age of 28.
Romi Kaplan – Co-Founder and Supervisor
Romi Kaplan is a UK trained psychotherapist and counsellor (Middlesex and Oxford University), registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and PSYSSA, with a working background in humanitarian aid. She has specialised in existential psychotherapy, trauma theory (NATAL, TAU) and PTSD (Harvard University), working with counsellors and non-profit workers in the humanitarian field. In 2019 she co-founded the Counselling Hub, Woodstock. She is a SACAP Foundation Board Member.
Romi is a trained facilitator (CDRA) and loves engaging with other professionals in a learning environment. Kaplan believes innovation in the mental health sector is essential, and getting to know about our emotional wellbeing is a cardinal human endeavour.
Nandipha Ganya – Programme Manager
Nandipha Ganya is a Social Worker who specialises in conceptualising, designing, and managing violence against women and mental health prevention and response programmes. Nandipha holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Fort Hare. She is an alumni fellow of the DG Murray Trust Fellowship for Organisational Innovation. She further possesses a postgraduate certificate in Programme Management from the University of Cape Town and a Rural Innovation Certificate from the University of Padova. She has over nine (9) years’ experience in the Non-profit sector working and innovating programmes to support and empower survivors of gender-based violence, children in need of care of protection, people in need of mental health care services as well as training, supervising and mentoring social workers, lay counsellors and mental health psychosocial support workers.
Loveness Moyo – Social media manager and event co-ordinator
Loveness Moyo is an accomplished social media manager and event coordinator with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Varsity College. She is skilled and dedicated with a flair for creativity alongside a passion for organisation and efficiency. She excels at managing tasks, streamlining processes, and ensuring the smooth operation of any organisation she works with. She is known for her attention to detail, excellent time management skills, and the ability to handle a wide range of administrative responsibilities.
A team player with exceptional communication and problem-solving skills, Loveness thrives in a collaborative environment and is dedicated to supporting the success of both colleagues and the organisation as a whole. She is passionate about contributing to the efficiency and growth of the organizations she serves, making her a valuable asset to any team.
Thato Makhofola – Office manager
Thato Makhofola is a dedicated professional who holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree (B.Soc.sci in Humanitarian and Societal Dynamics) specializing in Psychology, Sociology, and Criminology obtained at the University of the Free State. With over (3) three years of experience in the administration sector within both NGO and governmental settings, Thato has consistently demonstrated her commitment to efficiency, organization, and a deep passion for supporting others. Beyond her academic achievements and experience, Thato possesses a natural ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life, understanding their needs and concerns with genuine care and consideration. This innate empathy is a driving force in Thato’s commitment to helping others.
Jovious Masalu – EmotionAid
Jovious has completed her undergraduate BAppSocSci degree majoring in Psychology and Counselling at SACAP and is currently doing her Psychology Honours degree. During her last undergraduate year, she joined The Counselling Hub as a volunteer counselor where her passion has been to empower people with mental healthcare tools and knowledge that enrich the resources they already have in their arsenal.
She joined The Hub to aid in its mission of promoting mental healthcare and ensuring that mental healthcare services are accessible to all regardless of their socioeconomic background. Now in an administrative role for the EmotionAid team, she is channelling her passion on the community level by helping the EmotionAid team on their mission to teach, train, and get the EA toolkit in the hands of professionals, organizations, and schools in order to equip them with the wonderful yet simple and effective stress management tool for self-regulation during stress, burnout, and trauma.
